Belts with special machining for adapted wheelchairs

Belts with special machining for adapted wheelchairs

Wheelchairs adapted to stairs need a drive system that can transmit motion and provide stable support on the steps. In this application, the geometry of the belt and how it fits the mechanical assembly are decisive for the equipment to work properly.

To meet these needs, Ydins has designed and manufactured a custom double-sided timing belt with special machining. Its design combines two functions: transmitting motion through the inner teeth and acting as the contact surface with the steps through the outer teeth.

Double-sided teeth: drive and support

A double-sided timing belt has teeth on both sides. The inner teeth mesh with the system pulleys and transmit motion synchronously. The outer teeth can mesh with other pulleys or work in direct contact with a product or a surface, depending on the application.

In wheelchairs adapted to stairs, each side has a specific function. While the inner teeth drive the belt, the outer teeth make contact with the steps and support the equipment as it climbs and descends.

Special machining to adapt the belt to the equipment

Special machining adapts the belt geometry to the dimensions and operating requirements of each machine.

In this case, the machining was defined to fit the belt to the drive system of the chair. This adaptation takes into account how the belt fits into the mechanical assembly, the working travel and the contact with the steps.

The custom design addresses motion transmission and support needs together, two closely related aspects in this application.

How the belt works in the wheelchair adapted to stairs

The belt works like a track: it runs around the pulley system and keeps a contact area with the steps that supports the equipment.

The inner teeth receive motion from the pulleys, while the outer profile comes into contact with the steps as the chair moves forward. The belt geometry and machining must suit this interaction to support smooth, even travel when going up and down.

A custom solution for every application

Ydins studies the requirements of each piece of equipment to define the most suitable belt configuration, combining tooth profiles, machining, coatings, cleats and joining systems according to the needs of the project.

The case of wheelchairs adapted to stairs shows how a belt can perform functions that go beyond power transmission. When a standard solution does not suit the application, Ydins designs and manufactures a custom belt.
